Winner International Hospitality Awards The Best Historical Hotel 2018. Centrally located in Odessa's historic downtown, the Frederic Koklen Boutique Hotel occupies a classic style four storey listed mansion, built in 1852 by the famous Russian architect Ivan Kozlov for one of the city's most respectable families – the Koklens. French by origin, the Koklens were among Odessa's first settlers and contributed a lot into the growth and prosperity of the city. So, don't be surprised when you see the sculptured Gaelic Cock at the hotel's entrance! That's the symbol of the Koklen family.
The history of the prominent Koklens is closely connected with the fascinating history of Odessa. In the 19th century, the head of the family had exclusive rights to provide furniture to the court of the Russian Emperor. His son was one of the famous architects and bohemian types of Odessa. Over its 150 year-old history, the Koklens’ mansion saw many well-known architects, musicians and writers. It was the place of gatherings for the city’s bohemian types and cultural elite, among whom were Leonid Pasternak and his son, Boris Pasternak, the famous author of the Doctor Zhivago novel; Russian musicians Anton and Nikolai Rubinsteins.
Renovated and tastefully refurbished into one of the finest boutique hotel accommodations in Odessa, the Koklens’ mansion welcomed its first guests in the summer of 2011, offering a fine combination of upscale luxury, exquisite design and highest standards of service. The Frederic Koklen hotel became more than just a temporary accommodation for Odessa’s guests – it became a home, far from home.
